Interesting use of site maps

Site maps are important for search engines to be able to fully discover the pages that your site contains.

But what about a large site, do you just put 200 or more links down on one page?

Probably not the way not go.

I have been looking at ringtonefinder.com.au recently and I noticed an upgrade to the way this site handles it's sitemaps. Rembering that you not only want all your pages indexed but also to indicate which pages hold priority.

At ringtone finder -
From the main index there is a link to the site map, see:
Ringtones site map
which contains references (or a map) to the most important pages on the ringtones site.

From that page it links down in hierachial structure to a new folder which contains a map of the less important sub sections of the site, see:
Ringtones Global Site Map
which contains references to the site maps of the ringtones site sub sections, which in this sites case is the international versions of the main (or most important content) part of the site.

Also out of each of those indexes and sub site maps is a link back to the most important page of the entire site.

All of this breaks the references per page down to an acceptable level and places more emphasis on the higher priority pages within the site, so it is hoped.

I'll keep track of this to see the impact.
